With her elegant appearance, velvety voice and slightly cynical character, Melody Gardot (New Jersey, 1985) could be a granddaughter of Peggy Lee. And because of her power and soul she is also compared with Nina Simone. Despite her tender age the talented singer-songwriter is a North Sea Jazz veteran having already performed at the festival in 2008 and 2009. Gardot makes an impression with her songs that are based on jazz and blues, and her feisty performance on stage. On YouTube you can see a clip, for instance, where Gardot scolds a visitor whose ringtone resonates through the hall. To the delight of the audience she starts a conversation with the caller which she lets flow seamlessly into the song Baby I'm A Fool. Anyone who wants to obstruct Gardot, will have to work really hard. Being hit by a car when she was nineteen years old has often been used as an example: thanks to her willpower - and music - she was able to overcome her injuries.
