Art Poster Competition

Every year, North Sea Jazz holds a design competition among students at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. The work of all finalists is exhibited in Ahoy; this way, the festival aims to provide young talent with a platform to show their work.
The winning poster, designed by Jassey Hamling, breathes new life into the festival in an inimitable way, according to the jury: “With a shrimp bearing the typical, stoic facial features of a musical genius, this poster surprises and enchants from start to finish. Raw lines, subtle spray can effects and handwritten doodles breathe the free spirit of jazz and hip-hop. From the trumpet, the improvising scribbles effortlessly meander towards the festival title, in a movement that feels as dynamic as it does natural. The result is a powerful and idiosyncratic image that convincingly adds a new chapter to the rich tradition of North Sea Jazz Art Posters.”
The winning poster design can be purchased at the festival's merchandise stands.
