During the twenty-five years of its existence the Vienna Art Orchestra has done many special projects. From a large homage to Duke Ellington in 1999, where famous and less famous pieces of the composer were played, to a CD celebrating the 100th birthday of George Gershwin featuring guest stars like Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joe Lovano and many more. Every year the theme was a different challenge (the music of Billie Holiday, Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus), from excursions to classical music (Strauss and Mozart) or big band music (Ellington), guest soloists and participating in theme-festivals, from multimedia-projects accompanied by visuals, to extensive tours of the globe. Driving force behind this orchestra is conductor and composer Mathias Rüegg whose inspiration brings some fresh air into the orchestra. Under his leadership the VAO keeps placing creative milestones, time and again.
