Although big bands have never really disappeared, you could say that they have been experiencing a revival recently with the emergence of new bands with young members who bring innovative influences with them. Beats & Pieces Big Band from Manchester is a good example. Founded in 2008, this 14-piece group led by Ben Cottrell has already garnered high praise for the way in which they combine the bravado and energy of pop with the refinement of jazz. Cottrell, who is also much in demand as an arranger (he has worked with Esperanza Spalding, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Metropole Orkest and others) draws inspiration for his compositions just as easily from Björk and Radiohead as from Duke Ellington and Gil Evans, or European jazz innovators like Mike Gibbs and Colin Tawns. In 2013, the band’s well-received debut album Big Ideas led to them being named Best UK Newcomer at the Jazz FM Awards. Their follow-up album All In was released last year.
