The repertoire of The Cat Empire
is not simple. The Australian band is actually not easy to put into a musical category. The six-piece band describes their music as jazz/reggae/funk/Latin/gipsy/Cuban/Australian party music. The latter is an especially important ingredient for the Melbourne-based band, because no matter where they play, it’s a party. The Cat Empire put on a compelling show, full of creativity, humor and energy which has earned the Aussies an enormous global fanbase over the past fifteen years. This party band, which strangely enough has no guitarist, knows no boundaries. The result on stage is a spontaneous mix of melody and rhythm in a variety of styles. Or, as trumpeter Harry Angus aptly said: “The beat of a record belongs to all nations. It should make people smile, make people dance. That's all we want.”
