Five Elementsis one of the many groups through which alto saxophonist Steve Coleman (1956) reveals to us his musical and spiritual flow of ideas. The band was formed after Coleman had explored new directions in the eighties withM-Base Collective, a loosely organized group of musicians who regularly played with one another in a variety of lineups.Five Elements later became the flagship for many of Coleman's initiatives. The lineup varies: Coleman recently reduced the ensemble to a quartet that recorded the studio album Functional Arrhythmias (Pi Records). Trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson (1982) has been one of Coleman's dedicated followers since 2000. London bassist Anthony Tidd (1972) moved to the US in 1996 after he had charmed Coleman with a demo.Drummer Sean Rickman (1970) plays guitar and bass and can sing as well. He has been working with Coleman since 1996.
