Phase Five, a vocal pop album based on instrumental hardcore jazz,is the result of the collaboration between jazz saxophonist YuriHoning and producer FLORiS. For this record, Honing scrutinized the30 or so albums he has made until now. From it, the Edison-winnercollected fragments that were skilfully mixed into new projects byFLORiS, Room Eleven's producer. He cut and pasted the recordingsand made loops, giving Honing's work a new dimension. Subsequently, vocalists like Lilian Vieira, Janne Schra and Sarah Bettenscontributed by writing songs based on these loops. These songsinspired the sax player, in his turn, into playing brand new solosthat give the album his own stamp. Throughout his career, Honinghas been seeking to extend the boundaries of jazz. He sees thegenre like a language that is open to inspirational musicalencounters. With FLORiS, who used to be a producer of house music,he has succeeded once again.
