NN North Sea Jazz presents lineup for 2022

NN North Sea Jazz Festival discloses its complete lineup for 2022 today. In the weekend of July 8-10, around 160 performances will take place, divided between 15 stages.

In addition to names that were previously announced, such as Alicia Keys, Diana Ross, Nile Rodgers & CHIC, Erykah Badu, Gregory Porter, H.E.R., Diana Krall, IbrahIm Maalouf, Michael Kiwanuka and Artist in Residence Herbie Hancock, this year Rotterdam Ahoy will also host shows by Eliane Elias, Maarten Hogenhuis met het Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest, DULFER! Total Response, Michelle David & The True-tones, and Bruut!

Special projects and collaborations
As always, the festival will contain a number of special projects and collaborations. For instance: the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra will perform with singer Lizz Wright. Metropole Orkest will bring two extraordinary concerts: Mississippi Goddam! honors the music of Nina Simone, with singers Ledisi and Lisa Fisher as special guests. Also, the orchestra will perform new, outstanding compositions together with multi instrumentalist Louis Cole (known from Knower and viral videos by Clown Core). Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla’s music has been used in films and series such as ‘Brokeback Mountain’, ‘Babel’, ‘Making A Murderer’, and ‘Narcos Mexico’. At NN North Sea Jazz, he will perform his film music in Europe for the very first time. Holland’s most adventurous drummer, Han Bennink, turned 80 this year and will celebrate on Saturday with three different performances: together with saxophonist Ben van Gelder and guitarist Reinier Baas; a duet with pianist Aki Takase; and with ICP Orchestra, which has been his regular band for 55 years.

Composition Assignment
Every year, the festival grants a free composition assignment to a promising Dutch jazz composer. This year the honor goes to saxophonist, arranger and composer Marike van Dijk. The jury found Van Dijk’s compositions have the right balance between composed music and space for improvisation and swing, and found these elements, that are so distinctive to jazz, of great importance. The premiere will take place in Missouri hall on Friday.

Art
In addition to the music, much room is given at the festival to the different art exhibitions, among which the Exhibitions by Bob Smit, Dutch Design with works by famous international designers Kiki van Eijk and Joost van Bleiswijk, and the Art Bar. The Nederlands Fotomuseum will show a selection from the Gallery of Honour of Dutch Photography.
