Special
Projects

Large orchestras and special combinations: it can happen at North Sea Jazz. This year there are several special projects that deserve extra attention.
Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest will perform together with Lizz Wright. The highly acclaimed and prize-winning Metropole Orkest will perform two remarkable concerts. Mississippi Goddam! is a tribute to the music of Nina Simone, with guest vocalists Ledisi and Lisa Fischer. Multi-instrumentalist Louis Cole (known for Knower and the obscure yet viral videos of Clown Core) will perform new work with the orchestra, combining hard grooves, cheesy ballads and grimy sounds in a logical but humorous way.
Other online favorites are The Fearless Flyers’ videos, with super tight and groovy funk. It will be the first time this all-star formation can be experienced live in Europe. Band members Nate Smith and Cory Wong will also perform in other settings at the festival.

There is a good chance you have heard music by Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla before, as his music can be heard in various commercials, movies, games and series. He has received Oscars for the soundtracks of Brokeback Mountain and Babel and wrote the music for the series Making A Murderer and Narcos Mexico. Santaolalla is an intuitive musician who does not read scores and often uses Argentinian folk music as a basis. At NN North Sea Jazz, he will perform his film music for the first time in Europe.
