Broken beats and deep grooves, followed by a sudden switch to post-rock and minimalism: NAUSYQA do whatever they feel like doing, which is making music of a progressive nature. The Amsterdam quintet’s material, which is solely instrumental, is evocative of dreamy landscapes. In addition to the cinematic abstractions however, reality is just a few notes away, which also lends a raw and earthy element to their music. The members have their roots in the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Italy. The beats lean heavily towards drum and bass, and the melodies vary considerably in tension. These conservatory-trained musicians combine the acoustic and electronic, drawing inspiration from composers such as Steve Reich and electronic producers such as Floating Points. Using the trumpet and saxophone, they compose soundtracks for never-released films – road movies no doubt, because for NAUSYQA, the meaningfulness of the journey always eclipses the arrival.
