Few musicians are as creative as composer and bandleader Maria Schneider (1960), who learned the trade at a young age from orchestra leader Gil Evans, and started her own orchestra in 1992, consisting solely of first-rate musicians from New York. That was in Greenwich Village, and lasted some five years. Her album Concert In The Garden was rewarded with a Grammy in 2005. Orchestra leaders such as Thad Jones and Duke Ellington were major role models for her. Schneider has a knack for bringing out the best in her band members. In 2020, she released a unique album entitled Data Lords, which is considered by many to be her magnum opus. This year she’ll perform with the Clasijazz Big Band, which is a collective of celebrated musicians from the Spanish jazz scene, including saxophonist and vocalist Antonio Lizana. Their set will include pieces such as Buleria, which also features accordion player Philippe Thuriot.
