“Fresh and innovative” and “unmistakably the sound of today” is how DownBeat magazine described Kris Davis in one of its articles. The 45 year-old Canadian jazz pianist and composer is a key figure within the New York jazz scene, releasing 25 albums as a bandleader and co-leader, and working with a long line of greats, which include Dave Holland, esperanza spalding and John Zorn. In 2021, Davis received the prestigious Doris Day Award, alongside Wayne Shorter and Danilo Pérez. A year later, she won a Grammy for her contribution to Terri Lyne Carrington's album New Standards Vol. 1. Davis' latest release is called Run The Gauntlet: a record where she and her trio skilfully merge structured compositions with spontaneous improvisations. Through this record, Davis honors six women who made an indelible impression on her, namely Geri Allen, Carla Bley, Renee Rosnes, Angelica Sanchez, Marilyn Crispell and Sylvie Courvoisier - all pioneers of improvisation, just like Davis herself.
