Energy, having fun playing music, and an acute sense of the here and now is what characterizes the most famous ‘grand old man’ of Dutch jazz, Hans Dulfer (1940) best. With his illustrious formations (including Perikels, Reflud, Big Boy) he worked his way up to become the most famous saxophonist in the Netherlands. In addition, he played a defining role at the very dawn of the Dutch jazz scene, as an organizer, an advisor (also for the North Sea Jazz Festival) and co-founder of Amsterdam’s renowned Bimhuis jazz venue. He played psychedelic free jazz, created the first Dutch world music, and was the first jazz musician to work with house DJs. In his fifties, he even achieved pop star status in Japan. Dulfer still prefers to play live, in the most diverse places, and with ever-renewed vigor. He hosted radio programs for years, wrote columns, published two books, and has acted in films and series. Right now though, Dulfer is ready for some on-stage action with his formation Dulfer! Total Response.
