Saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Tomoki Sanders grew up in a special musical environment – which isn’t too unusual, with the legendary spiritual jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders as a father. Even so, they soon set about forging a career of their own within the New York jazz scene, studying with greats such as Ralph Peterson Jr. and George Garzone at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Since then, Sanders has worked with a variety of artists, from Ravi Coltrane and Kassa Overall, to Moses Sumney and the Kyoto Jazz Sextet. There are aspects of the spiritual jazz tradition within their own music, as well as hip-hop, electronica and experimental music influences. Sanders belongs to a generation of young New York musicians who are well aware of the heritage of jazz, but who tear the genre wide open without hesitation. Sanders’ playing is intense, highly expressive and always looking for new pathways.
