When Kokoroko burst onto the London scene in 2018, it marked the start of an impressive series of Afrobeat releases and concerts. The group quickly established itself as a band that embraced the West African soul and funk of the 1970s. That nostalgia is still there, but since their second album, Tuff Times Never Last, the band has continued to evolve. The album is like a summer party with old acquaintances, family, and above all, lots of friends: the air thick with warmth, cheerfulness, and a touch of melancholy. The band is incorporating more and more electronics into their sound and flirts with the African disco sound of William Onyeabor. But reggae and Afro-soul aren’t far behind either; it’s a fusion of everything that grooves in London. With Kokoroko, you want the evening to last forever.
