Even those who don’t speak Tamil will definitely be touched by Ganavya’s voice. The Hindu poetry and South Asian music she effortlessly mixes with American spiritual jazz seeps into your skin. She grew up in an artistic family where South Indian Tamil culture was central; her grandmother was a classically trained musician and well known in India. As a singer, Ganavya performed at SAULT’s first ever live performance in 2023, while also working on finishing her debut album Daughter Of A Temple. And it really became a temple: the album feels like a safe space for deep emotions. She collaborated on it with the likes of Shabaka Hutchings, esperanza spalding, and Vijay Iyer. Anyone who has heard Arooj Aftab at the festival and been swept away should watch out for the warm, deep voice of Ganavy.
