Singer-songwriter Judith Hill began her career as a backing singer with stars like Michael Jackson and Josh Groban. She won a Grammy for her musical performance in 20 Feet From Stardom, a 2013 documentary about Hill and her fellow backup singers. In a television interview, Hill expressed a desire to work with Prince, and the artist subsequently invited her to come to his studio. The meeting brought about not only a musical collaboration but a love affair too. Prince produced Hill’s debut album Back In Time in 2015, a catchy, funky record. But after Prince died in 2016, Hill was dubbed a ‘black widow’ by the tabloids and internet trolls. The trauma she suffered as a result almost ended her career, but she picked herself up and decided to turn her experiences into music. The result is the impressive album Letters From A Black Widow: raw and vulnerable, but also powerful, orchestral and exhilarating.
