50 Years of North Sea Jazz Photography
On Madeira Avenue, you will find the exhibition ‘50 Years of North Sea Jazz Photography’ featuring work by three leading photographers. Rico De Rozario, Paul Bergen, and Andreas Terlaak have captured the festival over the years.
Rico D’Rozario
Rico D'Rozario started out as a musician, but realized his talent behind the camera was bigger than that behind the drums. Since he took up photography in the seventies, his work has been awarded numerous times; for instance, he won the Portrait Prize at the Zilveren Camera Awards twice. Major music stars have appeared before his lens; from Mick Jagger and Miles Davis to Prince and Beyoncé. He worked for various magazines, including the pop magazine OOR, but also provided photographs for hundreds of records and CDs by artists. He released several photobooks and exhibited his work in various locations, from Amsterdam to Paris, and previously at North Sea Jazz.
Paul Bergen
Paul Bergen started out as a general press photographer, but has been one of the most famous Dutch music photographers for decades. Known for his live photos and portraits of artists, he has captured major pop and rock stars such as Nirvana, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, and U2, as well as jazz cats like Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Sonny Rollins. His work has appeared in various newspapers, magazines, and even TV documentaries, and he also works on commission for the ANP photo agency. Bergen has been exhibiting at North Sea Jazz for years and has released several photo books, such as Nineties Spirit and Zero’s Heroes.
Andreas Terlaak
After graduating Andreas Terlaak decided to combine his talent with his great passion for music and became a concert photographer. He captured countless live concerts and experienced many highlights in his profession. For instance, he was Neil Diamond's regular tour photographer for years and worked with Prince at his shows in Amsterdam's Paradiso. Later in his career, he expanded his scope to Formula 1 and dance. Much of his work is published by the daily newspaper NRC and concert organization MOJO. Terlaak won first prize twice at the Zilveren Camera Awards, for his photos of Amy Winehouse and dance company Conny Janssen Danst.
