Technology and improvisation: that must mean chaos, right? Well, not with Tin Men and the Telephone. This trio, founded in 2009 by pianist Tony Roe (winner of the 2024 Boy Edgar Prize), has built a reputation for cutting-edge jazz. Cutting-edge in terms of sound – because these musicians are top-notch – and in terms of technology. They’ve created their own app that allows the audience to interact with the show, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, they gave their global audience control over their studio during online performances. It’s About Time? is their new project in which the trio toys with our concept of time using musical flashbacks and flashforwards, mixed with cinema, jazz and technology. A bit chaotic after all, perhaps? It’s actually more like total freedom!
