Bolivian singer Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Puerto Rican drummer Frank Rosaly are two people who are intertwined both romantically and creatively. The duo, who are based in Amsterdam, released their new album Mestizx last year. On this eclectic record, the pair worked with a wide variety of musicians. Ferragutti and Rosaly push boundaries in a unique manner, by connecting Latin American music forms with jazz: one moment Ferragutti sounds akin to Astrud Gilberto on a free jazz sojourn, while the next she could easily pass for a priestess conducting an old Andean ritual. Then there is Rosaly, who hammers out the most insane rhythms. Mestizx is a rousing, intercultural and anti-colonial blend of avant-garde jazz, rock, art-punk, bomba, cumbia, electronica, folk and more besides, all masterfully arranged. The music Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti & Frank Rosaly bring is original, universal, multi-coloured, eccentric, and fascinating all at once.
