It caused a slight sensation back in 1965, when the iconic singer Rita Reys announced the making of an album with the American grandmaster Oliver Nelson: a man with a great track record as the arranger on key recordings such as The Blues And The Abstract Truth. Rita Reys wasn’t very enthusiastic about the project (“I just don't fit in well with a big band”), but the arrangements were excellent. The original manuscripts were discovered by the Netherlands Jazz Archive in 2023, and used for the Dutch Jazz Heritage concert series: a collaboration between the Dutch Jazz Archive and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. Two generations of Dutch jazz vocalists interpret these timeless arrangements; among them Fay Claassen, who is often viewed as the successor to Rita Reys. The younger talent Anna Serierse can use her voice both as a soloist and as an instrument, and the Belgian singer Esther Van Hees is a versatile vocalist with a deep love for jazz and lyrical tunes.
