The work of Swiss harpist, composer and singer Julie Campiche is a constant process of musical innovation in which she also uses electronic effects. In 2016, she formed the Julie Campiche Quartet with Manu Hagmann (bass), Clemens Kuratle (drums) and Leo Fumagalli (saxophone). In 2020, she released her debut album Onkalo with that quartet. For that album, Campiche began thinking about how to translate her concerns about the climate crisis into music. She continues on this path on the follow-up album You Matter (2022). Campiche’s intention is to transform feelings of hopelessness into activism, because in her view, everyone matters – and that means everyone can make a difference. In any case, the music that results is fascinating with alternating dark and more hopeful soundscapes, up-tempo passages and beautiful introspective pieces in which the harp plays a leading role or merges organically with Fumagalli’s saxophone.
