Guitarist Reinier Baas (1985) was recently awarded the Boy Edgar Prize, the most important award for jazz and improvised music in the Netherlands. The jury praised Baas as an authentic innovator who brings tradition and experiment together in his own way, and said: “Baas makes complex music accessible to a wide audience and consciously seeks connections with other genres and art forms.” Baas is also currently the artistic director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NJJO). Sixteen top talents started a two-year coaching program under his leadership, which will help mold them into the creators of today’s and tomorrow’s jazz music. During this process, they’ll head out on tour and work together on a variety of projects. The title of this NJJO program is Opus Kaleidscopus, and it contains surprisingly danceable music by progressive artists such as Fuensanta, Petter Eldh, Genevieve Artadi and Misha Mengelberg, with some new arrangements of Baas' own pieces.
