With her adventurous compositions and warm stage presence, Mei Semones is fast becoming a distinctive new crowd favorite on the contemporary jazz and indie scene. The New York-based guitarist and songwriter doesn’t like being confined to musical categories. She enjoys floating between diverse, slightly contrasting genres such as indie rock, bossa nova, jazz, and chamber pop. With her refined guitar playing and soft, distinctive voice, she creates a unique creative universe where technical virtuosity and playful melodies come together. With her critically acclaimed EP Kabutomushi (2024), she won over audiences in her home country, followed by a tour and her decision to pursue her musical career full-time. On her debut album Animaru (2025), we hear an artist who fully trusts her intuition and dares to present herself as more vulnerable, adventurous and confident than ever before. Musically, she moves between intimate acoustic moments and lavishly arranged passages with complex rhythms and sparkling guitar work, while her lyrics celebrate her love for family, music, and everyday life.
