While the festival may be celebrating a birthday, Jong JOC is also celebrating a wonderful anniversary this year: they are turning five! That’s how long this big band full of young people has demonstrated that passion for jazz knows no age – in various forms, as the lineup is completely renewed every year. Jong JOC is the young talent division of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw (JOC). Every year, following an intensive bootcamp, the band reforms with young musicians aged 12 to 18. These young jazz cats play music of all shapes and sizes: from the 50s to the present day, and various genres such as soul, funk, and jazz. Jong JOC performs several times a year, for example as the opening act for the ‘big’ JOC. The band is led by artistic director Chris Muller. The pianist, composer, conductor, bandleader, and arranger has shared the stage with renowned artists and various orchestras, including the JOC, Paradox Jazz Orchestra, and his own Chris Muller Big Band.
