MARO was part of Jacob Collier's band on his Djesse World Tour, appeared on stage with Odesza and Parcels, opened for Shawn Mendes in sold-out arenas, and represented Portugal in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest with Saudade, Saudade. Despite all those spells in other artists’ bands, Maro is first and foremost a free-spirited solo artist, not merely an accompanist to other musicians. The singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Lisbon studied at the Berklee College of Music, and debuted in 2018 with a series of albums that connected the dots between fado melancholy, folk and contemporary pop. Her acoustic trio album Hortelã (2023), recorded with Catalan guitarists Darío Barroso and Pau Figueres, won the José Afonso Award for Portuguese Album of the Year. Maro’s latest album So Much Has Changed is a sunnier affair: upbeat, colorful and driven by a full band, with that same spark that anyone who has seen her perform live at least once will recognize.
