The Spanish pianist Xavi Torres at one point decided to settle in Amsterdam, which is something of a bonus for the Dutch capital, for Torres is one of the most virtuoso musicians on the European scene. His trio (with Reinier Elizarde and Andreu Pitarch) will be completed at the festival by Miguel Zenón. This Puerto Rican saxophonist has picked up Grammys and a range of other awards. Zenón pays tribute to the bolero, draws inspiration from indigenous cultures in the Americas, and incorporates African and European influences in his work. With his passionate improvisations, he propels Latin jazz through Caribbean rhythms. The gathering of these virtuosos promises to render a dazzling and adventurous show full of innovation and energy. There is a joint album in the making that is set for release at the end of the year, but prior to that, we’re lucky enough to be able to sample some of the music live on stage.
