The Patricia Brennan Septet is an ensemble made up of creative improvisers. The core of this septet is Patricia Brennan's original More Touch quartet with Kim Cass on bass, Marcus Gilmore on drums and Mauricio Herrera on percussion, accompanied by three horns: Adam O'Farrill on trumpet and electronics, Jon Irabagon on alto and sopranino saxophone, and Mark Shim on tenor saxophone. On the debut album Breaking Stretch (2024, Pyroclastic Records), vibraphone player Brennan says some of her favorite bands from her youth are audible, all of which were strongly rhythmically driven. She was inspired by the salsa of Fania All-Stars, Cuban sounds of danzoneras, and wind and brass rock groups from the 1970s (Earth, Wind & Fire; Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago). Through orchestral techniques, Brennan aims to create a broad musical canvas, where conflicting elements blur and ultimately merge.
