Sabrina Starke has accumulated what amounts to an impressive list of honors over 20 years, winning multiple awards, including two Edisons, and is one of the rare Dutch artists to make her debut on the Blue Note label (Yellow Brick Road, 2008). However, the Rotterdam singer-songwriter and producer is much more forward than backward looking – always seeking out new challenges. She has paid impressive tributes to Bill Withers (Lean on Me, 2013) and Nina Simone (with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw). She always incorporates her influences – from reggae, jazz, soul, folk, hip-hop and blues – into a very unique and contemporary sound. Her latest album, Weather the Storm (2024), is her most intimate to date; written during a dark period of illness. The record conveys a story of survival, reflection and inner growth. The fact that such powerful, hopeful music came out of this tumultuous time proves once again that Starke is a positive force to be reckoned with.
