She is one of the great talents of the new wave of Brazilian music, but then singer Dora Morelenbaum was practically born into música popular brasileira. Her parents were members of Tom Jobim’s band and she was brought up on the genre. Morelenbaum brings this music into the here and now on her solo debut Pique, which was released on the adventurous British label Mr Bongo. Her vocal qualities are astonishing: she combines the carefreeness of the bossa nova with the precision of a sharpshooter. On the album, swaying love songs alternate with the Brazilian tradition, which she effortlessly links to funk with a solid New Orleans edge. In addition to being a solo artist, Morelenbaum is also part of the Bala Desejo quartet, formed during the coronavirus pandemic: their debut album SIM SIM SIM (2022) won a Latin Grammy and the group was also nominated for two Multishow Brazilian Music Awards that same year.
