Ten years after his groundbreaking album In The Moment, drummer, composer and bandleader Makaya McCraven makes a return to the festival – joined again by his regular partners in crime: trumpeter Marquis Hill, guitarist Matt Gold and bassist Junius Paul. McCraven is coming to the Netherlands for the fourth time this year, which is not especially surprising, as he is one of the most exciting and groundbreaking jazz musicians of our time – besides, his music is so overwhelming, that even seeing him several times is barely enough to take in everything that’s going on. There are tight hip-hop beats, launches into rock-type solos, feather-light, jazzy brush work and Afrobeat-like polyrhythmic wizardry, fused together by a fair amount of electronica. McCraven won the Rising Star Award in DownBeat's 2020 Critics Poll, and released his latest album, the critically acclaimed In These Times, in 2022. Its successor is set for release this summer.
