Samulnori, or samul nori, is a genre of Korean percussion music. It was born in 1978 and based on the rhythms of Korean farming music and ritualistic music. Utilizing four instruments made of wood, leather, and metal, Samulnori expresses a wide range of rhythms, which makes it a music form that humans can deeply feel and experience. Samulnori makes it possible for musicians to communicate with the modern audience by recognizing the essence of traditions and reinterpreting it from a modern viewpoint. The group Samulnori Newdot was formed in 2018 and since then, has been making constant efforts to study the nowness of tradition. While honoring the latter, they have created their own unique music while exploring various types of rhythms scattered across South Korea.
