A trio that proves an age difference need not be an obstacle. Danish drummer Daniel Sommer (b. 1987) met Norwegian bass legend Arild Andersen (b. 1945) in Oslo, where they played as a duo and talked about music and improvisation. Andersen’s career is impressive; early on he made recordings on the ECM label and played with Jan Garbarek, Don Cherry, Bill Frisell, Sonny Rollins and Chick Corea, among others. To expand their collaboration, Andersen suggested adding British rising star guitarist Rob Luft (b. 1993) as a third member. This marked the birth of the trio. In March 2023, they met for the first time in Denmark, where they performed and recorded the remarkable album As Time Passes (2024). The album is a celebration of jazz as a fluid and versatile form of expression. The trio infuses their contemporary context with the Scandinavian sound, combining original compositions with structured improvisation.
