About Matthew Herbert Big Band

The British DJ, producer and sound artist Matthew Herbert has made it his mission to find "original" sounds for his music, preferably created on the spot, on stage. Herbert is known for his unexpected acts like breaking CDs or using shards of glass. On the dance scene (jazz house, electro, techno) he is known under his own name, but also as Doctor Rockit, Radioboy, Whishmountain and Herbert. He works according to a manifesto he wrote himself that forbids the sampling of other musicians' sounds, for instance. Herbert's work often engages politics: for example, with the project Plat du Jour he attacked the modern food industry. In 2003 he surprised the scene with Goodbye Swingtime, a jazz big band CD with electronics. He is currently working on a new big band CD There's Me and There's You, an album that is due for release in the coming fall.
