North Sea Jazz proudly presents this year’s Artist in Residence: Chick Corea. You would think he has had the privilege before, but due to his busy schedule keyboard player Chick Corea (1941) has never been the Artist in Residence of the festival. So it’s about time to give this trail-blazing and always enthusiastic musician the stage for three days. Corea has opted to perform with three completely different combinations that he feels very comfortable with.
In the 1980s the Elektric Band was the successor to Corea’s successful fusion group Return to Forever and has made a lasting impact on generations of jazz musicians. The group will come to the festival on Friday with an all-star lineup, with guitarist Frank Gambale, saxophonist Eric Marienthal, drummer Dave Weckl and bassist Nathan East.
The albums Two and The Enchantment already demonstrated his duo with extraordinary banjo virtuoso Belá Fleck is a golden combination. On Saturday the North Sea Jazz audience will enjoy the twosome for the first time live.
For many years now Chick Corea has also had a strong bond with the Norwegian Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, a variable pool of the most creative musicians from Scandinavia. With it Corea shows a cross section of the wealth of his musical career, where his piano playing is balanced with the inimitable, genre-crossing sound of the orchestra.
