Guitarist John Scofield is a master in initiating interesting projects. With the Piety Street Band, this American star gives his own interpretation of the 'old time' gospel repertoire. The atmosphere is laid back and the music is sometimes reminiscent of the R&B of bands like The Meters. The major component is the blues, but blues that goes further than the simple song structures we know so well. It is more of a New Orleans sound which you can also hear on the debut album Piety Street. The artists who play on this album and are part of the stage line-up, are all legends in their domains. For example, Hammond organ player Jon Cleary. And legendary drummer Ricky Fataar who has played with Bonnie Raitt, among others, provides relaxed and plaintive rhythms.
