Since the beginning of the North Sea Jazz Festival an art show has been part of the event. This year’s art show gives you a wide range of works of art and the best photography around.
North Sea Jazz Art Show
On Wednesday 9 July 7.30 pm Ahoy Rotterdam opens her doors to the North Sea Jazz Art exhibition. The exhibition officially opens at 8.30 pm with a program that also includes the award show for the first price winner of the North Sea Jazz Art Poster – designing contest. The highlight of the evening is the presentation of the book Happy Man from "Zilveren Camera" (Silver Camera) winner Peter van Breukelen, with text from J.A. Deelder, about the life of altsaxophone player Benjamin Herman, leader of the New Cool Collective. The "Zilveren Camera" is an initiative from the Dutch Association of Photographers. The first Silver Camera was awarded in 1949.
But also the presence of the famous jazz painter Jazzamoart from Mexico, blues photographer Dick Waterman and the performance of the New York painter Easton Davy on the Music of DJ Andre Dadi, make the evening very special. During the North Sea Jazz Festival you can see the work of 16 artists, amongst which items of the Rijnmond-artists Karin de Visser, Peter Hofland, Ron Weijers and Nikolaj Dielemans. Producer and formel owner of New York based jazz club Sweet Basis, Horst Liepolt made a few paintings especially for this edition of the North Sea Jazz Art Show. Jazzoamoart also made paintings especially for the North Sea Jazz Art Show. In a special art gallery many portraits of big names of the jazz world are assembled. These portraits are taken by the best music photographers in the world.
The North Sea Jazz Art Show in detail
On the second floor of the Ahoy complex is the centre of the exhibition with work of all participating painters: Easton Davy, Jazzamoart, Ron Weijers, Peter Hofland, Nikolaj Dielemans, Elke Bücheler, Horst Liepolt and Karin de Visser. Here you will also find the information desk and a shop where you can buy pictures, art prints, books, catalogs and small original artworks. Drawer Guusje Kaayk will present the drawings that she makes at the festival in the shop as well.
On the third floor the exhibition continuous. In this hall there are pictures of Dick Waterman and Rotterdam based photographer Henk Visser. The large paintings by Jazzamoart are located in this area as well. A separate part of the exhibition is the portrait gallery on the first floor in the long corridor between the Nile en the central space of Ahoy. The best portraits of Paul Bergen, Dirk W. de Jong, Andreas Terlaak (winner Zilveren Camera 2007 Cultuur/Kunst-Enkel), Joke Schot, Baron Wolman, Ton van Wageningen, Rico d’Rozario and Richard Sinte Maartensdijk are displayed in this area.
As Jaap van der Klomp’s book with tombstones of famous jazz musicians will be presented at the festival, a selection of these photographs will also be present in Ahoy. This year too, the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam will be responsible for the presentation of the poster designs of students for the festival. The winner receives his / her price during the opening of the Art Show in Ahoy 9 July.
