Every year, the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam organize a design competition for students: the North Sea Jazz Art Poster Competition.

This year’s winner is William Mooijman. The jury chose his design for the power of its image: the organized chaos that is so typical of jazz improvisations. The elements of elusiveness and vulnerability in improvisations as well as the explosiveness are strongly present in the design, in a beautiful – if almost unrecognizable image –ingeniously formed by one of the most familiar of all jazz instruments: the trumpet.
