Global Brooklyn NY

Since the 1930s, New York has been recognized as the jazz capitol of the world. Thanks to globalization, alongside American jazz musicians, the city has been attracting musicians from every corner of the globe since the 1990s.

Friday 9 July 2010

The lively jazz scene that recently emerged in Brooklyn is a fine example of the constant innovation of jazz music, thanks to the different backgrounds of its interpreters. Take, for instance, Turkish guitarist Timuçin Sahin, who incorporates elements of
classical Turkish music deep into his compositions and with it creates a unique sound. Or British pianist John Escreet who can play two long compositions, one right after the other, without losing the audience’s attention, thanks to his classical background. Also in this program: Rudder and Todd Sickafoose. These young artists prove to be both excellent composers and outstanding instrumentalists.

Saturday 10 July 2010

New York is a historic city for composers, starting with Tin Pan Alley, known from many a Broadway musical, right up to the almost weekly broadcasts of Paul Whiteman and Duke Ellington. The Brooklyn scene has also generated young and talented performers who have a strong bond with the versatile composers of this era – their mentors: Darcy James with Bob Brookmeyer, Steve Lehman with Anthony Braxton. To continue this program, musicians Tigran Hamasyan and Jonathan Haffner will fuse their various musical backgrounds into new jazz forms in New York City.
