About Darcy James Argue with the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra
A much talked-about jazz musician: Darcy James Argue, who is not
only the leader of a big band that performs remarkable music, but
is also known for his unusual way of presenting it. His American
band is called Secret Society and its debut album - dubbed best
debut of 2009 by the Jazz Critics Poll of the Village Voice - was
named Infernal Machines. According to the New York Times, his sound
not only flirts with Steve Reich's minimalism, but also with the
way Bob Brookmeyer works with big bands. For the record: Brookmeyer
used to be a mentor of James Argue. But the young Canadian also
combines influences of many musical styles in his pieces: rock,
jazz, classical and modern music. His compositions are often
complex and filled with many emotions. At the North Sea Jazz
Festival, he will perform his work with the aid of a European
orchestra, as part of the "Global Brooklyn, N.Y." theme.
