About The Nublu Orchestra Conducted by Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris
The Nublu Orchestra consists of musicians from bands like
Brazilian Girls, Wax Poetic, Kudu, Forro in the Dark and I Led
Three Lives. They have one thing in common: the Nublu, a hip music
club in the New York East Village that is their home. The orchestra
is conducted with the striking gestures of composer and free jazz
cornet player Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris, who made a name for
himself in the seventies on the avant-garde scene with musicians
like David Murray and Harriet Buiett. Morris became known for his
individual style of conducting, a method he named "conduction".
With his hands he instructs the band to improvise harmony, melody
and phrasing. From free jazz to techno, the musical spectrum of the
Nublu Orchestra is colorful and moves every which way - just like
the club, that programs like no other club and even has its own
record label.
