About The Metropole Orchestra conducted by Vince Mendoza "A Tribute to Joe Zawinul"

Last year keyboardist/organist Joe Zawinul was present at the North Sea Jazz Festival where he celebrated the twentieth anniversary of his band The Zawinul Syndicate. Unfortunately the synthesizer specialist died in his birthplace Vienna in September 2007. The jazz world held its breath for a moment: another important architect of jazz had passed away. Zawinul was an expressive, passionate musician who was averse to placing limits on creativity. He was the author of a great number of colorful compositions. At the beginning of this year, Joe Zawinul was supposed to have been the guest of honor at a concert of the Metropole Orchestra, conducted by Vince Mendoza. In the end the concert turned into a loving tribute and the guest soloists were the musicians with whom the keyboard player had performed in Weather Report and The Zawinul Syndicate - drummer Peter Erskine, bass guitarist Victor Bailey, guitarist/vocalist Amit Chatterjee and pianist Jim Beard. Especially for North Sea Jazz, this commemorative concert will be performed again.
