About Ron Carter "Dear Miles"
In the sixties, double bass player Ron Carter used to be part of
the so-called "second large quintet" of Miles Davis, a band that
actually might have been the very best combo that jazz has ever
known. So if there's anyone who has the right to make a tribute
album for Miles Davis, it's Carter. Yet, ten years ago, the bassist
would have been offended if people would have asked him to make
such a CD. He felt such records usually wind up as ego tripping
with no respect. The fact that Carter released his homage Dear
Miles last year was more of a coincidence than a carefully
considered plan. For about fifteen years, the bassist led a quartet
with, among others, pianist Stephen Scott. This quartet's
repertoire consists of many music pieces that are somehow linked to
the music of Miles Davis. Hence the Dear Miles project. Carter's
most recent CD is called It's the Time (2007). This is Carter
showing the world he is still one of the very best double bass
players in the world, even though he is in the autumn of his
career.
