About Concha Buika with special guest Horacio "El Negro" Hernández
Before her breakthrough, the Spanish singer Concha Buika, who
was born in Mallorca, sang mainly in clubs on the islands. She is
the daughter of African parents (originally from Equatorial
Guinea), but grew up among Spanish gypsies where she was musically
shaped by flamenco. During her studies in London she became the
protégé of guitarist Pat Metheny, which marked the beginning of her
career. With her striking voice, Buika impresses with a mix of
flamenco, soul, funk and jazz. She also has a powerful stage
presence. In 2005 she released her first CD, Buido, an album that
fully expressed her gipsy roots and strong voice. A year later she
confirmed her impressive reputation with Mi Niña Lola. The Cuban
super drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernández played with stars of pop
and world music as well as jazz, including Santana, Gonzalo
Rubalcaba and Dizzy Gillespie.
