About Acoustic Ladyland
The British saxophonist Pete Wareham had a mission: to find
musicians who, like him, objected to sterile jazz. Once his mission
was accomplished he founded Acoustic Ladyland. The songs the band
envisaged had to have as much substance as that of John Coltrane,
but at the same time be just as much fun as The Velvet
Underground's I'm Waiting for the Man. The band's name indicates
their great respect for Jimi Hendrix, the rock guitarist who
recorded an album entitled Electric Ladyland. With the awesome
Polar Bear drummer Seb Rochford driving the beat, the band has
developed a live sound that resembles Slayer jamming with the Sex
Pistols. Despite the band's heavy rock sound, Wareham never forgets
to improvise; one of the many reasons that Jazzwise magazine named
the album Last Chance Disco Album Of The Year in 2005. On the
Skinny Grin album from 2006, Acoustic Ladyland diverged onto yet
another path when the band worked with female singers: Coco
Electric and Alice Grant.
