About Preservation Hall Jazz Band
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is named after the hall with the
same name in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans. The
top of the music scene has performed there since 1961. Caretaker
Allan Jaffe started organizing opportunities for musicians under
the name Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Almost half a century later
the band can still be regarded as the custodian of original and
pure hot New Orleans jazz. The ensemble, which includes a
substantial wind section, performs traditional music and is
conducted by the present creative director Benjamin Jaffe (son of
Allan). The pace of New Orleans jazz is somewhat slower than in
other jazz genres. The greatness of the music really lies in its
simplicity: the improvisations are the core of the melody. Last
year the CD box Made in New Orleans: The Hurricane Sessions was
released. It includes historic recordings, saved from the recent
Katrina flood in New Orleans.
