About Charles Tolliver Big Band
Trumpeter Charles Tolliver's name doesn't ring a bell with the
general public. Still Dizzy Gillespie once called him one of the
best in Down Beat jazz magazine. The self-taught Tolliver was born
in Jacksonville, Florida, and got his first instrument, a cornet,
from his grandmother. At first he considered becoming a doctor, but
after he had met and recorded with Jackie McLean he changed his
plans. He can be heard as a sideman on many Blue Note classics with
artists like Roy Haynes, Horace Silver, McCoy Tyner and Sonny
Rollins. During the sixties and seventies Tolliver developed into a
gifted trumpet player, composer and leader of his big band.
Currently he's in the center of attention again. Firstly with his
contribution to Andrew Hill's last CD Time Lines and secondly
because of With Love, a big band recording for Blue Note.
